System and Network administration for the Decision and Control group is currently provided by John Bambenek (help@control.csl.uiuc.edu). The best way to contact the system administrator is via electronic mail, or in emergencies Becky or Francie will be able to contact him. The system administrator's office is in 140 CSL.
ACCEPTABLE USE POLICIES:
These policies are applied uniformly to all users regardless of academic status. In general, they are non-negotiable. In addition to the campus-wide computing policy at http://www.cio.uiuc.edu/policies.asp the following are policies at CSL (not necessarily a complete list):
- No P2P software (morpheus, Kazaa, etc.)
- No excessive use of bandwidth (i.e. downloading 10 GB of movies in an hour)
- No downloading copyrighted material (As much as the RIAA is the devil, and I'd fight them in a heartbeat, being a University employee I'm probably not allowed any legal maneuvering independent of the University counsel.)
- No running any port-scanners or other security tools without prior approval of the system administrator
- All machines not maintained by the system administrator are the sole responsibility of the user (I may help if I have time, but it is low on the priority list)
- All Windows machines are to run Windows update either automatically, or manually once a week
- Generally behave like a good citizen, do not hog resources or engage in other bad behavior.

- Workstation List - type "system-list" at the command prompt of any workstation (program is in /usr/local/bin)

Frequently Asked Questions:
- How do I get an IP Address for my laptop?
The preferred method for laptops is the use of the wireless network, e-mail help@control.csl.uiuc.edu for settings. For a hardwired system, send an e-mail to help@control.csl.uiuc.edu with your desired hostname and your MAC address of the network card. The MAC address can be obtained in Windows by opening a command window (Start Menu -> Run -> cmd or command) and typing ipconfig /all. For Linux, type /usr/sbin/ifconfig -a.
- Why can't I access anything outside CSL?
The building network is designed to detect misuse of the network, usually a result of a virus infection or P2P software. Contact help@control.csl.uiuc.edu with your IP address and you'll be told why and either given anti-virus software to install, or be subject to a lecture on appropriate use of the network.
- I'd like to run a web server/e-mail server/ssh server that I can access from the outside...
Sorry, the head honcho of CSL has decided that we will have a protected network and limited points of access. I have no control over this policy. If you think have a legitimate reason for needing some publicly accessible machine or service, reconsider. If you still believe this is the case, contact John Bambenek and present your case. I will present it to the higher ups, but have no control over the decision. In short, you need a real convincing reason.
