Hello and welcome to my academic website. I am currently a PhD student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In May, 2009, I will join the Visual Computing Group at Microsoft Research Asia.

My research interests...

... lie at the intersection of computer vision, machine learning and statistical signal processing. We are developing tools that exploit various related notions of parsimony (sparsity, rank-deficiency, degeneracy) to do effective inference with high-dimensional data under non-ideal observation conditions:
  • Convex programming approaches to recovering low-rank matrices and sparse signals.
  • Sparse representation in computer vision: face recognition, image superresolution and myriad other applications.
  • Machine learning, especially as it relates to lossy coding, compression and information theory.
  • Compression, representation and segmentation of images and video.
